10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not fun for a lot of us. But it is important. As the holidays and winter near an end and we begin looking forward to spring and warm weather, something inside of us encourages us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing, and getting rid of things we’ve piled up over the winter months.
But who says spring cleaning is limited to the interior of your house?
The exterior of your home could likely use some tidying up after a cold, wet winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the curb appeal of your home in Huntsville, and, even more important, will offer much-needed care and maintenance that will save a lot of money in years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the optimal time to clean out your gutters, because a lot of leaves and debris collected during the fall and winter months. The pollen count is at its highest during the spring, making a mess in your gutters if they are not cleaned.
Plus, bugs and animals are looking for places to build homes during spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and rust stains and restoring them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Exterior window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows will not give you much of an issue, but second and third floor windows will be a bit tougher to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tough chore, and it will require a lot of supplies, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the best solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and windows on a dirty house. That means you will want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is fast, effective and doesn’t cost very much. You can pressure clean your house, outdoor furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will remove dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your home, and you can prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem silly because you’ll be driving on it, but actually, a clean, maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washer will do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it is pavement, asphalt, stone or another material. Also think about adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio probably gets the most use in the summer months, so it can be easy to forget about it during the winter since you are not doing any outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio can be in bad condition the first time you go onto it in the spring.
Detergent and water – and a little elbow grease – are sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or algae, you may need to think about a more serious option, like professional power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Algae and moss are common roof problems in Huntsville. While you are cleaning the exterior of your home, it is an excellent time to pressure clean your home’s roof too, but you’ll have to use a different method than what you use for most of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you see streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is typically obvious, too. These particles can’t be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your home’s roof.
The ideal method for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water solution and then leave it sit. This will kill any organic organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Tidy up the Front
The front of your home is what most people see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Returning home to a beautiful exterior will instantly improve your day, and it will motivate you to spend a lot more time outside.
Clean your front porch with soap and water or a good pressure wash. Wipe cobwebs and dirt off of the front porch, and consider painting it for a really fresh look! Clean forgotten areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Outdoor Tools
You’ll soon be spending much more time outside, so spring is a great chance to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor work.
Yard tools and pool care equipment must all have a specific place outside your home – a place that it is safe from harsh weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore to anyone. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the exterior of your home so much more throughout the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your yard, trees and bushes can make a huge impact on the look of your home.
Kill weeds near the exterior of your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up places where you might be planting in the future and brush off walkways. You can spray pre-emergent weed killer to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could need a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are unappetizing, but even worse they can make you and your family ill.
Wipe it down to remove leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber or grill brush (so you do not leave behind metal particles that can sometimes get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
